After that, Jesus asks for the stone of the grave to be removed, but Martha interjects that there will be a smell. Then, after asking where he was buried, the shortest verse in the four Gospels, and the entire Bible is found - Jesus wept. Upon seeing their grief and weeping, Jesus is deeply moved. Upon entering the village, Jesus is met by Mary and the people who have come to console her. The only other time this happens in the entire gospel is in the explanation the author of the Gospel gives for writing his Gospel at the very end. I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world", is only the second time (after Nathanael) that someone declares Jesus as Son of God and the first time someone equates him as 'Messiah' and 'Son of God' together. Martha's affirmation that she does indeed believe, "Yes, Lord. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Jesus assures Martha that her brother will rise again and states: "I am the resurrection and the life. Before they enter the town, Martha, Lazarus' sister, comes to meet Jesus and tells him: "if you had been here, my brother would not have died". When they arrive in Bethany, Lazarus has been dead and buried for four days. The disciples are afraid of returning to Judea, but Jesus says: "Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to awaken him." when the apostles misunderstand, he clarifies, "Lazarus is dead, and for your sake, I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe." Jesus then delays his departure for two days. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." Jesus tells his followers: "This sickness will not end in death. Bible Story of Lazarus Raised from the DeadĪccording to John, Jesus receives a message that Lazarus is ill, and his two sisters seek his help. Martha, Mary’s sister, complained to Jesus that her sister needed to help her in the kitchen ( Luke 10:38-42). His sister, Mary, would sit at the Master’s feet and listen to his words. John gives no indication that they chief priests were foolish for thinking that Lazarus could die again, and no indication that it would not have been possible for them to do this.Jesus had previously visited the three siblings and had enjoyed the family’s hospitality. ![]() A few days of death is not equivalent to the eternal hell that sinners deserve.Īlso, John seems to imply that Lazarus is still subject to death by mentioning that the chief priests sought to put the resurrected Lazarus to death (John 12:10). If one dies and is resurrected after a few days, he still bears the condemnation of the sins he committed prior to his death. Moreover, the only way to avoid condemnation in hell is through Jesus - one's own death is not sufficient to pay the penalty in full. Lazarus, therefore, would have been subject to death again as a result of his sin. As Paul teaches, death results from sin (Rom. Moreover, Paul also indicated in this passage that no one except Jesus will have such a body before Jesus returns.Īnother reason is that John gives us no indication that Lazarus was raised without sin. Since Lazarus was raised before Jesus, he could not have had a glorified body. In 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 Paul indicated that Jesus was the "first fruits" of those to be raised from the dead, that Jesus was the first one to be raised with a glorified body. One reason we know he died again is that he was not resurrected with a glorified body, and only those raised with glorified bodies are not subject to death and corruption.
